What does stress, digestion and tiredness have in common?

When you’re stressed, your body goes into “fight or flight” of “freeze” modes, which redirects energy away from the digestive system, slowing down its functions and making it harder to properly digest and absorb nutrients. 

When digestion is sluggish, it can lead to a cascade of symptoms, such as:

  • Tiredness and low energy: Without proper nutrient absorption, your cells don’t get the fuel they need, leaving you feeling drained.
  • Low mood and fatigue: The gut produces neurotransmitters like serotonin, which play a key role in mood regulation. Poor gut health can disrupt this process, leading to feelings of low mood or even irritability.

By incorporating mindfulness techniques, deep breathing exercises, and relaxation routines, you can activate your body’s “rest and digest” state, which encourages smooth and efficient digestion. 

Taking time to eat more mindfully and to manage stress isn’t just good for your mind—it’s essential for a healthier, happier digestive system!

Here are a couple of practices I recommend that you try:

Start your meal with a couple of deep breaths, ideally with your eyes closed. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.

 

Slow down when eating, chew well. Put the cutlery down until you swallow what’s already in your mouth.

 

Establish a nourishing morning routine – start the day with a short meditation/gratitude or few minutes of journaling or intention setting.

 

Establish a calming evening routine – create a relaxing ambience that will aid restorative sleep. Dim your lights, play calming music or nature sound in the background, avoid overstimulation from the screens, news or intense exercise.

 

Include daily or weekly practices focused on rest and relaxation to balance the physical and mental activity – such as gentle movement, dance, meditation, walks in nature, yin yoga, etc.

 

To support the release of body memory of past trauma, consider counselling, psychotherapy, acupuncture, reiki, EFT tapping, breathwork or other forms of therapy or somatic practices that feel right for you.
